From Cornwall to Chelsea: A London Journey to Measure a Stunning Urban Apartment

At Curtain Maker Cornwall, our usual view involves the rolling Atlantic waves, rugged coastlines, and the beautiful coastal light of St Ives and Hayle. But this week, we packed up our measuring tapes, template paper, and notebook sheets, swapping the Cornish sea breeze for the bustling energy of the capital.

We hopped on the Great Western Railway (GWR) from Cornwall, watching the landscape shift from dramatic cliffs to the iconic iron-and-glass roof of London Paddington Station. From there, it was straight onto the London Underground, navigating the platforms to make our way over to the elegant streets of Chelsea.

Our mission? To measure up a beautiful Chelsea apartment for a complete set of bespoke, hand-finished window treatments.

Why the Right Measurement is Everything

When you are investing in bespoke curtains or premium Roman blinds, the magic is completely in the detail. Unlike off-the-shelf options, high-end window dressings require exact, millimetre-perfect measurements to ensure they hang flawlessly.

Visiting the apartment in person allowed us to assess all the critical elements that a simple numbers-on-a-page request can miss:

• The Architecture & Drops: Checking for uneven floors or historic plasterwork that might affect how the fabric skims the ground.

• Light Control: Assessing how the London sun hits the space, helping us determine whether to recommend luxury interlinings for warmth or premium blackout linings for a perfect night’s sleep.

• Fixing and Track Placement: Deciding exactly where the tracks or poles will sit to maximize the feeling of ceiling height and frame the windows beautifully.

Bringing Cornish Craftsmanship to the Capital

While we love dressing Cornwall’s finest homes and holiday rentals, there is something incredibly exciting about bringing our slow-interiors philosophy to an urban setting. Elegant city flats demand the same meticulous attention to detail—from perfectly calculated pleat placements to hand-mitred corners with hidden penny weights.

For this Chelsea project, we are looking at creating structured, sophisticated headings that complement the apartment’s refined architecture while keeping the space feeling warm, luxurious, and inviting.

Back in the Workroom...

Now that we are safely back in our Cornwall workroom, the real fun begins. The measurements are laid out, the fabric rolls are being prepped, and our sewing machines are ready. We will be pattern-matching, hand-stitching, and crafting these treatments to perfection over the coming weeks.
